P. V. Sindhu's 'Golden Smash'

Birmingham: The 22nd Commonwealth Games is being held in Birmingham.  The tournament, which began on July 28 at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham, is now in its final stages.  India’s female badminton player Sindhu has performed brilliantly on the last day of the tournament.  Sindhu has won the women’s singles title.  So India has got its first gold medal in badminton this year. 

The women’s singles final was played between Michelle Lee of Canada and PV Sindhu of India.  In this match, Sindhu defeated Michelle Lee with a margin of 21-15, 21-13.  This is Sindhu’s first gold and third medal overall at the Commonwealth Games.  Earlier, she had won bronze and silver medals in Glasgow in 2014 and Gold Coast in 2018 respectively.

In the women’s singles semi-final match on Sunday (August 7), PV Sindhu showed a tremendous game.  She defeated Wai Jia Min of Singapore 21-19, 21-17 to book her place in the final.  Singapore player Jia Min gave a tough fight to Sindhu.

 P.  V.  Sindhu also made it to the finals of the Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast.  At that time, Saina Nehwal and Sindhu met in the final round.  Saina had defeated Sindhu.  So Sindhu had to settle for a silver medal.
